But mostly I'm just someone who falls down rabbitholes and has a decent ability to recall what I find when I run down them.

Also I get curious about things and will just go. Experience them.

Access to low-cost college classes in california is a big part of this, and having the time and money to take classes while i'm working is something that I've been very lucky with)

I've also worked pretty much continuously since I was 18, sometimes holding multiple jobs at once, and I know a lot of interesting people who do a lot of interesting things and I ask them about their interesting experiences and if they offer me a chance to go do cool shit with them, like launch a high altitude balloon or blow up some dynamite that's about to expire or join a band, I do it!

I was also one of those kids who had no friends and spent too much time at the library so I'd do things like read through medical textbooks or pull a book of home chemical formulas out of the trash and read it or take it into my head that I was going to read all of Shakespeare before I got to high school so I was a really annoying twelve-year-old and that kind of thing never really let up.

I don't know! I don't think it's that unusual and I think most people do this kind of thing I just happen to have less focus than a lot of people and talk a lot more.

"I also put the internet server and passcode on a post it note," Fowler added before standing, "Alright, I have to head out but just bare quarantine for a few more weeks."

"Thank you!" Sasha called out, "For telling me about Jean."

Fowler nodded his head before walking out the area.

A full day today, so I figured it might be fun to write up what a professor's day might look like when not lecturing!

6:30AM: Got up early to virtually attend a friend's wedding on the East Coast! <333

8:00AM: I have been very careful this quarter to shuffle lectures/meetings around so that I have a little time to myself in the mornings to sit at home and drink coffee and eat breakfast and pet a cat while I get the day's work started. No exception today! I pull up an application my PhD student has been putting together for a tech grant and use the proverbial red pen to make some (a lot of) comments. It looks good overall, though! I send him a note to encourage him to send it to our collaborator in the computer science department when he's done with edits. Monday's the deadline, we gotta get moving on this.

9:00AM: I load up a bag with books I keep putting off taking to my office, plus some extra Halloween candy I found to add to my office candy bowl, and head out to take the bus in to campus. Also, pet the cat goodbye (she is unconcerned).

9:45AM: At the office, books and candy put away! Time to prep for my first meeting, which is a committee meeting with someone else's PhD student. He struggled a bit with a recent exam (entirely his advisor's fault, but that's a different story), so we're reconvening as a group to see his progress and cheer him on. He sent an update document, so I run through that and take a few notes. Then it's responding to e-mails (setting up my participation in a federal review panel next year, responding to two prospective graduate students interested in working with me - the combo of a fun research topic and a beautiful campus means I'm now up to 20 inquiries so far this quarter, eep - and sending out an update to the department about the charitable giving opportunities I'm coordinating).

10:30AM: Great presentation by the PhD student about all the things he's done since our last meeting back in April-ish. He's made huge changes to his work, and we applaud (literally and figuratively) how much he's accomplished in such a short time. Also, amazing data visualization! Great work all around. He's set to defend his PhD by 2025 at this rate, definitely back on track.

11:30AM: Time to rush back to my office to meet with my own PhD student! We usually meet on Fridays, but we get tomorrow off for the holiday so we jumped the meeting back. He's a few minutes late due to a missed bus, so my next-door colleague and I talk about cats for a few minutes. As you do. When he does arrive, he's got some cool stuff to show me - we talk about the notes I made on his grant application, and I remind him (and myself) to book flights to a conference in December that is rapidly approaching somehow. (I guess this means I have to do some cool and innovative research before then that I can talk about. Go figure.) He also shows me some cool preliminary results from a project he's been doing with a friend out in Pennsylvania. He's late enough in his PhD that my role as advisor is primarily to get out of his way and make sure he has enough supercomputer core-hours to get his work done!

12:30PM: A break for me! I start in on e-mail again, sending a coordinator my bio and abstract for a talk I've been invited to give (virtually, thankfully) at a student conference in January. I also realize that, because of the break tomorrow, I should really put together a homework assignment and next week's lectures for the class I teach Monday-Wednesday-Friday. Hmmm. I dig through last year's lectures and assignments and realize they've gotten a little out of sync this year. The solution? I may just offer 5 instead of 6 assignments over these ten weeks and give them this one a week later. Class average has been extremely high on them, and I think the students will appreciate a bit of a break. Also means today's job is just to prepare a few lectures based on last year's material. I've got a big chunk of open time later this afternoon to deal with course stuff, so back to e-mail. Going to be joining a friend (who I can't help but think of as the undergrad who sat in during all my grad classes, but is now somehow a full research scientist) on a very cool project putting together a new thunderstorm dataset. Also reached out to another friend about setting up biweekly meetings to hopefully start a new research collaboration and... possibly some fieldwork! I also almost forgot to put a forecast together for our forecasting competition, but I got there in time. Phew.

1:30PM: Meeting with a colleague and the undergrad research intern we co-supervise who is sadly having to leave to go attend school closer to home. This meeting is mostly just us reinforcing to her that we're still here if she needs advice/reference letters or ever wants to work on a similar project with us remotely in the future, but we are going to continue with the research until the end of the quarter, at her request. After the meeting, I get an e-mail about another undergraduate looking for a research project! I present her with the options of a cool lightning project with my colleague next door (waiting to hear back about federal funding for that project, fingers crossed) and that other cool thunderstorm project led by my friend in Oklahoma.

2:30PM: Seminar time! A very cool freshly-minted PhD from California tells us all about her research, a complicated topic about which I knew very little going in and now know... slightly more. There was a very geeky moment in which she showed what happened to a particular part of the climate system when CO2 was added, then showed what happened when CO2 was removed, and the asymmetry of it made everyone in the room gasp and then self-consciously giggle.

4:00PM: Post-seminar snacks acquired (a big cookie and coffee are definitely a good late lunch, right? I kid, I kid, I had a big breakfast and have a big dinner waiting at home) and small-talk survived, I scramble back up to my office. Time to get those lectures ready for next week (pretty quick to do - rather than last year, where I'd show the code on the screen and we'd talk about it, I'm having us write the code together live and debug as we go; harder in the moment for me, but the students are learning so much better!). Get an e-mail back from the new undergrad research intern expressing interest in the lightning project, amazing! Time to get her registered so she gets credit for this starting in January. Also finally get a teensy bit more editing done on a draft of a review article that one of the top scientific journals in the world tapped me to write (???? still surreal beyond measure).

5:30PM: BAND PRACTICE. Our department is so nerdy that the faculty/staff/postdocs/grad students put together a giant band to perform popular songs but as covers so we can make the lyrics about our nerdy research. This tradition has been going on for 30+ years, and the big performance is for an hour at our holiday party every year. It's a riot, and this is my first year joining in the chaos (I'm on keys on three songs!). There are like 25 of us, we have a horn section, a professor plays the mandolin, the students create elaborate musical roasts of their professors, it's great. My parts go great, to the point where when there's some trouble with key drift during an a capella part they call me in to play chords under it and keep them grounded. I love playing music with other people!

7:00PM: Time to pack up and head home for dinner. Phew.

Starfinder 2e Playtest

Okay, I found a humble bundle literally on its last couple of hours, and bought the Starfinder 2e Playtest Rulebook.

I haven’t heard too much about Starfinder’s second edition, but from what I’ve gathered, it’s aimed to bring the mechanical side of Starfinder closer to Pathfinder 2e. Possibly even to make the two games compatible with each other, so you can bring elements of one into the other. Which … Mixed feelings? Starfinder has a very different vibe and power level, I think, so not sure how that’s going to gel. And from what I’ve read of the book so far, it is very much Starfinder running on a Pathfinder 2e chassis. Which, okay.

The playtest rulebook feels like its written primarily for people coming to Starfinder from PF2e, though, instead of people coming from Starfinder 1e, which felt a little odd to me.

As an example of this, the skills chapter talks about what you can use the Pathfinder skills for in a science fantasy setting, and says that Starfinder introduces the two new skills of Computers and Piloting, but doesn’t at all mention how someone coming from Starfinder 1e’s skills can interpret them. Life science and physical science are now apparently lores, for example, both bluff and disguise come under deception, etc. That’s not stated, though, you’re just given the list of skills and have to figure out what’s where. Which, you could figure it out, but the book is clearly written using Pathfinder expectations as the base, not Starfinder ones?

This really feels like it’s updating Pathfinder to the Starfinder setting, not updating Starfinder to the Pathfinder system, if you follow me? And I’m not sure how I feel about it.

That said. A couple other semi-random thoughts.

The ancestries were always going to be one of the wonky conversions. Starfinder 1e has an absolutely fantastic and lengthy list of playable ancestries, because they’re like D&D 5e’s races, in that they’re a one-and-done deal. You get your basic set of traits and you’re off. To convert that to PF2e’s style ancestries, with their feats as you level, mean that it’s a lot more work to write Starfinder 2e ancestries, and there’s a bit of me that’s afraid that means there’s going to be a lot less of them. Your choice of cool aliens to play is going to be a lot more limited. (Please, I want Sarcesians, they’re my favourites!)

That said. Some of the feats are really cool? This book has 12 ancestries, and two of my favourites, the ysoki and the borai, are in there, but the one that caught my eye was the barathu, which didn’t really catch my interest in 1e, but 2e takes their ‘bag of self-programmable gas and biological goo’ thing, their ability to tailor their own evolution in real time, and turns it into some really cool and fun feats. My favourite pair are Vent Gas (lvl 5) and Corrosive Venting (lvl 13), because barathus are flying sacks of gas, and you can make like a squid and vent a bunch of it at once to give yourself cover and propel yourself away, and then level that up to vent acidic gas later on. Which is, *chef’s kiss*, absolutely do want.

I’m definitely not so hot on the backgrounds. I do miss themes, which was where 1e gave you your ‘feats as you level’, tailored to what you do more than what you are. PF2e style backgrounds a little bit boring by comparison.

The classes I don’t have as much of an opinion on, as I’d have to play them to see what they feel like.

The skills … Skills are definitely tripping me up some. I did kind of like 1e’s system where you got a number of ranks to distribute per level and you levelled up your skills manually. Pathfinder’s trained-expert-master-legendary is a weird mental conversion. I am enjoying some of the Starfinder-specific PF2e-style skill feats, though. Like ‘Percussive Maintenance’ if you’re expert in crafting, which is exactly what it sounds like (hit a glitchy tech item to make it un-glitch itself).

I don’t really have a conclusion here. I’ve only just gotten the book, this was just the first idle browse. Definitely mixed feelings so far. It is weirding me out a bit that it’s so firmly based in Pathfinder rather than Starfinder in terms of expectations and explanations, I will say that. This is supposed to be Starfinder 2e, not Pathfinder 2e: Starfinder expansion. Or, well. Maybe I’m wrong about that? But it does more work to give Pathfinder players a cool new setting than it does to give Starfinder players some cool new mechanics. Pathfinder is the more popular system, so they probably do have reason to think that more people will have it as a baseline, but it does feel … a little rough towards the Starfinder player base? The skills tripped me up a lot, and I did have PF2e as my introduction to Paizo. But I liked the Starfinder skill system, so it’s tripping me up to adjust expectations in the Starfinder setting to PF mechanics.

But, you know. I’m willing to roll with it and see. Just. I would really like 2e Sarcesians? Also more mystic connections. I’m sure all that will build through the cycle, this is just playtest material.

If they’re taking feedback on the writing, definitely I’d say build some more Starfinder 1e expectations into how you’re explaining things? Like, I can figure out that engineering has been folding into crafting, and the social skills have all been rearranged, but some textual nod to that conversion might be nice, you know?

What’s their full name? that's an interesting question. her real name is hwa-young kim (see Little Flower). when she left the syndicate, she changed her name to myeong-hwa kim, which was her mother's name. regardless, she goes by hwa.

What does their name mean? hwa-young means little flower. myeong-hwa means bright flower.

Do they have any nicknames? i suppose technically hwa.

How old are they? 27 years old at the start of the story.

When’s their birthday? she doesn't know. she doesn't have a birth certificate or any sort of record like that.

What’s their zodiac sign/element/birthstone/etc.? Do they believe that holds any significance? nope. she neither knows, nor cares, about astrology, other than a passing familiarity with the quaint, old earth custom.

What’s their species/subspecies? human. she just started obtaining starborn powers, but hates them. she actively avoids using them as they make her feel even more of a freak than she already feels.

What “class” do they belong to (for fantasy characters)? If none, what weapon do they favor? she's a sniper and hacker. her favorite weapon is her hard target sniper rifle. she's been trained since she was 12 in special unit military tactics.

APPEARANCE

What do they look like? 4'10", slender, but very muscular. she grew up on neon (high G world), so was already strong to begin with. naturally, she just has denser bones and muscles than even an average person on neon. think gymnast build. currently, dyed blue hair, cut into a short bob. one weird thing is that she has naturally curly hair, which is unusual for koreans.

Do they have a face claim? i had to look up what this means. anyway, it's me when i was 27, but with short hair.

What’s their style like? Clothes, hair, makeup? she has style? her style is completely based on what's practical in any setting. she doesn't think much about her looks, literally and figuratively.

How do they carry themselves? What’s their default expression? with as little expression as possible. when she's by herself, she can be very child-like. but, around almost every other person, she's non-nonsense and non-emotional.

Do they have any physical ailments or disabilities? she's autistic. she had a very traumatic, violent life until she left when the story starts.

Any defining features to their character? she has the ability to completely dissociate from all emotions and compartmentalize everything. it was a coping mechanism she developed as a child. she also has a kinda shaky morality as she was raised by a criminal syndicate. she's very utilitarian in that fact.

Do they have any particular “favorites” (food, books, and so on)? she's never been allowed to have any real hobbies, other than reading. she'd like to develop hobbies, but doesn't even know where to start. she loves classic books. she went through a phase in her teenage years obsessed with Lord Nelson's Navy. she loves reading about military history, but thinks marcus aurelius is a twat. she prefers sun tzu, to be trite.

BACKGROUND

Where were they born? What was their childhood like? she was born on neon. her mother was an aurora junkie and prostitute. she had a brother 2 years her senior. her mother sold both she and her brother to the Seokguh Syndicate when she was 7 and disappeared. they never saw their mother again. like many children that are part of the syndicate, she started as a look-out. she killed her first person when she was 10. always a prolific reader, and good with technology, she came to the notice of the special ops unit of the syndicate when she was 12, and was trained to be a cyber-runner and special unit tactics. she was about to be promoted to an underboss when she decided it was either to get out now, or never leave. that's when the story starts.

What’s their family like? see above. myeong-hwa was her mother's name, and everyone said that she looked like the spitting image of her mother. so, when she left the syndicate, she went to enhance to make herself look more like her mother.

What factions or organizations are they a part of? What ranks and titles do they hold? she is technically freestar collective, but feels no loyalty to any organization. she (currently) joined the freestar rangers. she's a member of constellation.

How do they fit into their “story”? well, she's the protagonist? so, the story is about her. not sure what this is asking.

Where do they currently live? What’s their place like? she considers her ship, the razorleaf, her home. it's the first place that's truly her own. she has it decorated to her specifications. the lodge is a somewhat-home.

How do they eventually die? that remains to be seen. i know how she dies. but, that's for the future.

RELATIONSHIPS

Do they have any friends? Would they consider anyone to be their best friend? she's learning how to make friends. her best and only true friend is sam, and cora by extension. she likes barrett because he does all of the talking. previous to constellation, she never had any friends. all relationships in the syndicate are purely transactional, and developing any emotion for anyone or anything was a liability.

What’s their friend group like? What role do they play in it? she's never had a friend group. see above.

What’s their love life like? Do they have any kids? sam coe, and cora coe by extension. she's madly in love with sam, but doesn't know or how to tell him. she also doesn't know if he reciprocates her feelings. they're currently sleeping together, but she doesn't know if that means anything. prior to sam, sex had always been completely physical, and in her experience, she has no reason to think he thinks otherwise.

Who do they look up to? Who do they trust? whom do they look up to, and whom to they trust. anyway, the only person she trusts is sam, and that's kinda shaky. she doesn't really trust anyone. she doesn't know how. she doesn't look up to anyone.

Who do they hate? Do they have any enemies? whom, again. no one. she doesn't like a good number of people, but hate, no one. to spend that level of emotional energy on anyone is illogical.

Do they have any pets? nope. never even occurred to her to have one.

Are they good with kids? Animals? she actually is quite fond of children of all ages. when she was in the Syndicate, if she wasn't out on a job, she'd help take care of the children. she unreservedly loves cora like a daughter.

SOCIAL

1. How does your OC feel about their full name? they have no feelings about it. it was done out of practical necessity.

2. What do strangers notice about them first? she's very short and unemotional.

How does their social personality differ from how they act when they’re alone? when she's alone, or with sam, she can be very child-like in her wonder of the universe. she's learning to let down he guard with sam and let herself feel anything. when she's with anyone else, she's non-emotional and totally business.

How do they act around a crush? she tried very hard to repress her attraction to sam. in her experience, emotions and attachments were a liability. but, she liked being around him because she thought he was funny. and she really liked to just listen to his voice. also, she already adored cora. she doesn't know how to show affection. she's very binary in that either she's very emotional or completely emotionless.

hello loa! i hope you've been well ! i have a question, apologies if you've gotten one like this before but i want to get into coding as i recently just got the free coding course from harvard and i trie the freecodecamp once.

is math really a staple? i'd like to think i'm techy, i mean i took a really basic compsci class in highschool lol which was heavily html based nso, super easy.. but i'm scared! idk if im particularly good at math bc i didn't get to see my potential back in highschool but idk if this will make or break my decision of pursuing to study computer science bc people will say its not just coding.

if it IS math based, what should i do? i feel like i would need to go all the way back to grade school and start off from scratch. i'm really nervous, idk what to do

I think I answered a similar ask but I said that the maths I encounter on a day-to-day is maths from Year 10/Grade 9. It's not hard stuff. The maths I learnt at year 12-13-ish (Grade 11-12) was a lot harder than the maths I use at work and personal projects.

I don't have any proper educational experience outside of web development so but I do have a mate who does Computer Science as a degree in university and he has some maths books. But Web Development is creating art online. Designing, I am a creative person so I think that is why I leaned into Web Development more.

Yeah there's more to Computer Science than coding, that's why I niched it down to learning software/web development at my apprenticeship. With Comp Sci I would have learnt unnecessary stuff that would have made me not to continue learning.

There are degree course that are just a specific area within computer science like web deve, machine learning, game dev, systems, etc. look for the one you actually like rather than doing overall computer science - that's one idea!

Ohhhh boy. Lots of inflammatory things being said in the tags 😰 Homeschooling is not abuse and can work very well for some families. Saying or implying that homeschoolers as a monolith are religiously indoctrinated, uneducated, unsocialized “weird kids” is a very harmful, ignorant thing.

I was homeschooled my whole life. The only formal education I ever received was when I went through 2 years of community college to get my high school diploma/AA degree. I can’t speak for the rest of the states, but in Washington we were required to take a standardized test at the end of every school year that measured our academic progress. I was almost always in the top 1% of students in the state.

I was the type of homeschooler that was allowed to “run wild” with no specific class time enforced by my mom. Unschooled, we call it. Since I and my sisters are ADHD, autistic, and several types of mentally ill, a standard schooling system was never ever going to work for us. Believe me, my mom tried. She could not get me to sit in a chair long enough to be taught anything, especially if it was something I wasn’t interested in, like math.

My mom was of the opinion that we should be able to learn whatever we wanted and were interested in. She didn’t want us to be constrained by the typical 8-subject school curriculum. And I can say, with confidence, that I was equally if not MORE educated than my peers because of this. Until I got to university this year, I was usually the person with the most knowledge (depth and breadth of topics) in a room of my peers.

All I did as a kid was read books (I often read more than one per day), watch TV (although the types of things I was allowed to watch was regulated by my parents), and play outside. I participated in NaNoWriMo for several years, starting when I was 11 or 12. I haven’t stopped writing.

We did attend a few co-ops, where I interacted with a lot of homeschoolers. I never ONCE met someone who was uneducated because of being homeschooled. I met people who were dumb, sure. But there are dumb people in public school.

The point I’m trying to make here is that homeschooling being regulated is kind of against the point. I firmly believe that if there were subjects I was required to study, and curriculum my mom was supposed to follow, that I would have had a miserable and unsuccessful childhood education experience. I cannot stress this enough, if I had been sent to school and/or had a more structured schooling environment, I would have gotten really bad grades and built up a reputation as a bad/lazy/unmotivated kid, because of my hyperactive ADHD. I would have been bullied for being awkward because I was undiagnosed autistic. (Lo and behold, when I eventually did go into public school part-time, those exact things happened, and they are still happening in university to some extent. I have run into more problems with my formal institutional education than I ever did at home.)

I realize that I am an ideal success story- I went from absolutely no education structure to graduating with my AA degree at 18 with a 3.8 GPA. (Not to brag, but I had a 4.0 until my depression got really bad in my final quarter 😌💅) I was also very privileged to have two college-educated parents, one with a doctorate. And despite my parents being conservative-leaning Christians for most of my life, with a liberal uptick at the end, I was not religiously indoctrinated. My parents always encouraged us to think for ourselves, and that was the whole point of our unschooling.

And I am absolutely not saying that there weren’t issues with my schooling— I barely did any STEM as a kid and was unable to pursue a STEM degree now, in university, because I chose to avoid it like the plague when I was younger and it would take me too long to catch up on coursework now if I want to graduate at my original planned date. But in no way am I lacking in STEM knowledge— I am a computer science minor and I do very well, if not better, in those classes than the humanities I am familiar with.

The good vastly outweighed the bad. And if there had been strict regulations on how my parents were allowed to educate me, I would not have been the success story that I am. (It is perhaps also worth noting that I am now a leftist lesbian Christian-skeptic. My parents encouraging us to learn on our own allowed me to come to, and be comfortable with, my own conclusions about the world and my place in it.)

The notion that homeschoolers have these insurmountable gaps in their education and socialization is just insane. Most homeschooled people, even the ones who come from a conservative Christian background, go on to be very successful adults. We are independent, free-thinking problem solvers that can fit into any field.

I also have 10 cousins who are/have been homeschooled the trad-Christian way, and there are some who are breaking free from even that. The independence is a key part of being homeschooled that allows us to develop critical thinking skills that would otherwise be far less honed.

Regulations will not keep kids from being indoctrinated into a way of life by their parents. They will not help kids receive education in the manner that will best suit them. I don’t know what kind of regulations OP wants, and perhaps the standardized testing system in WA would be enough for all 50 states. But the stricter the regulations, the closer we get to a homogenized American-centered worldview. Then we’ve made a full circle, haven’t we?

PS. the “unregulated homeschooling” behavior some of you are describing has nothing to do with actual homeschooling and everything to do with parental neglect and abuse. Which absolutely should be kept an eye on and taken care of, but doesn’t have anything to do with what homeschoolers are being taught by their parents.

homeschooling in the US needs to be regulated but this is one of those conversations that immediately gets crushed by extremist conservatives and even well-meaning liberals will pipe up to be like "well some homeschooling is good!" when that's absolutely not relevant. regulation will not change anything for the homeschooling families who are serious about their children's education. the people who need to be regulated are the fringe extremists
